“50 Tours of a Lifetime” – The Danube

National Geographic Traveler has honored ExperiencePlus! Bicycle Tours once again by naming our Bicycling the Danube from Germany to Vienna Plus! Hungary tour as one of “50 Tours of a Lifetime” for 2011! Last year, our Camino de Santiago: Roncesvalles to Santiago bicycle tour received the “50 Tours of a Lifetime” award.  Although we may think all of our itineraries are trips of a lifetime, we are very proud that our bicycle tours have earned national recognition two years running.

National Geographic Traveler senior editor Norie Quintos, who headed up the project of selecting tours this year, notes “The outfitters we selected continue to find new ways travelers can connect with places and people. More and more, it’s about human interaction.”  The human interaction made possible by traveling by bicycle rather than by car is indeed tremendous. This is one of the most important values we hold to here at ExperiencePlus!: to encourage human connections by designing trips and itineraries that take you behind the scenes and crowds to the heart of each destination.

What makes Bicycling the Danube from Germany to Vienna Plus! Hungary so exceptional?

  • Riding in 4 countries including Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.
  • The ideal combination of bike paths and quite roads.
  • Picture-perfect villages.
  • Three amazing capital cities, including Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest.
  • Layers of history revealed along the banks of one of central Europe’s largest rivers.
  • Some of the most delicious pastries we’ve tasted anywhere, not to mention some pretty exquisite wines.

Of course, the best way to hear about what makes some trips special is from those who have been there:
This was an adventure of a lifetime (so far). It was especially moving to me to visit Hungary – the land of my father’s birth – and learn first hand about its history and people. The scenery – the entire trip was so beautiful – with the river at our sides and the wind at our back (sometimes). Our tour leaders added so much to our enjoyment. I can’t wait for our next ExperiencePlus! trip.

The overall experience was fabulous. I liked the length of the rides; the food, particularly in Hungary; the sights; the terrain. One experience that will stay with me (probably forever) is the visit to Maulthausen Concentration Camp. This was a wonderful trip.

This was a fabulous tour. It met all my expectations and then some. I loved the route. Cycling from Passau to Vienna was my favorite part of the ride. Being on a smooth, dedicated cycleway with a great group of people was pure pleasure. Our wonderful team of three leaders made it unique and so special!
