    1. Day 1: Tour begins in Naples, Italy

Highlights: Sights of Naples, introductory dinner

We gather in Naples this afternoon for introductions and a walk through the colorful historic town center. Naples is home to the National Archeological Museum, the San Carlo Opera House, the Royal Palace, the National Art Gallery (full of Renaissance masters) and its 13th century castle. If you have the time you'll want to come a day or two early to explore this fascinating city. We'll have a special welcome dinner together this evening.

    2. Day 2: Hike Mount Vesuvius and Explore Herculaneum

Highlights: Vesuvius, Herculaneum, and the Valley of the Giants, Pompeii

After breakfast this morning we'll gather picnic supplies and shuttle up Mount Vesuvius for a spectacular hike around the summit and through the Valley of the Giants. After our hike we shuttle to Herculaneum, a Roman town destroyed in 79 A.D. by the eruption of Vesuvius. Herculaneum is only about one third the size of Pompeii, but it is more intact and the ruins offer a unique view into ancient Roman life. We'll be in Pompeii this evening, where dinner is on your own. Walking distance of 4.5 km (about 2.5 hours), though our hike today isn't long there are some moderate to challenging sections.

    3. Day 3: Explore Pompeii, Sorrento and Capri

Highlights: Guided tour of Pompeii and ferry to Capri

After breakfast this morning we walk across the street from our hotel and into the excavations of Pompeii. Rediscovered in the 16th century, Pompeii remained nearly perfectly preserved since it was buried under 6 meters of ash and stone. Excavations began in 1748 at the request of the Bourbon King of Naples Charles III. Today only two thirds of Pompeii has been excavated. We'll do a guided visit and then allow time for you to explore on your own. Later we'll shuttle on to the town of Sorrento, where according to early Greek legend, Ulysses and his crew heard the tempting song of the Sirens in the Odyssey. We'll catch our boat to the island of Capri this afternoon. Dinner is together tonight.

    4. Day 4: Visit Capri, Hike to Mount Solaro

Highlights: Dramatic cliffs, swim in emerald green water, natural beauty abounds

We have a full day on Capri today, vacation home to Roman Emperors (Tiberius and Caesar Augustus) and movie stars alike! The island, with its dramatic limestone cliffs, emerald green water and natural beauty, is considered by many to be Italy's most beautiful asset. We'll hike the mountain that forms the backbone of the island stopping for lunch and a swim before our final climb to Mount Solaro the highest point on the island. The views are spectacular and include Vesuvius, Capri and Anacapri. Dinner is on your own tonight. Walking distance of 5-11.5 km (from 3 to 7 hours), moderate with some challenging uphill sections.

    5. Day 5: Hike to Positano

Highlights: Picturesque village of Positano, spectacular views of the coast

After breakfast today we'll catch our boat back to the mainland and then shuttle to the starting point of today's hike. After gathering picnic supplies we'll hike through a chestnut forest from Montepertuso to Capo D'Acqua and then down to Positano, enjoying spectacular views of the coast along the way. Our route takes us to the picturesque village of Positano, our home for next two nights. We'll have dinner together tonight. Walking distance of 6.7 km (about 4 hours), though there is not a tremendous elevation gain today, some people will find the downhill challenging.

    6. Day 6: Hike along the "Path of the Gods"

Highlights: Hike from Bomerano along the "Path of the Gods"

After a shuttle to the village of Bomerano, we'll begin our hike along the famous Path of the Gods (as you hike you'll understand why). We'll stop in the small hamlet of Montepertuso for a light lunch together, and then shuttle back to Positano for some shopping or a swim. Dinner is on your own this evening. There are plenty of local restaurants that serve the pescato of the day! Walking distance of 8 km (about 4 hours), easy with a few moderate sections.

    7. Day 7: Ravello to Scala and Amalfi

      Highlights: Ravello, farewell dinner

Today, we shuttle by boat to Amalfi and then transfer to Ravello, one of the most popular towns on the Amalfi coast. The sunny climate of this coast has appealed to writers, artists, and dreamers for centuries. Boccaccio, D. H. Lawrence, and the German composer Richard Wagner are among the famous people who have called this area home. Wagner composed part of his opera "Parsifal" here and today Ravello is home to the Wagnerian Music Festival each July. We'll hike from Ravello to Amalfi along the famous Valle delle Ferriere. We'll enjoy a special final dinner together this evening. Walking distance of 6.5 km (about 4 hours), though there is not a tremendous elevation gain today, some people will find the downhill challenging.

    8. Day 8: Tour ends in Amalfi

There are plenty of transportation options to take you back to Salerno or Naples for train or flight connections. We highly recommend a few extra days to explore Amalfi or Ravello. Either way, enjoy your journey!
