The ExperiencePlus! Biking B'day Bash - Fort Collins, Colorado

  • Itinerary Summary

As we celebrate 40 years of cycling the world, we thought we should begin the festivities in our home town. Fort Collins, Colorado is the US Headquarters for ExperiencePlus! Bicycle Tours and has a growing National and International reputation for its great variety of cycling terrain. In fact the 2011 UCI World Cycling Tour began their tour here and in 2009 Fort Collins hosted the USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals. Our mid-sized city of 143,986 (according to the 2010 census) features over 280 miles of bike lanes and another 30+ miles of bike trails. The city has been known to remove lanes designed for car traffic to make space for spacious bike lanes, and has also converted a few precious parking spots in the Old Town (downtown) area into bike parking. Bikes don't quite rule yet, but we're working on it. In fact, Rick Price, founding parent of ExperiencePlus! since his "retirement" has spent much of his time working on promoting safe cycling in our community.

The city is also home to some of the finest micro and craft brewers in the USA including New Belgium Brewery, the maker of Fat Tire. Many restaurants pride themselves on featuring locally grown organic produce and meats. We have a local cheese maker, MouCo, who has earned national awards; Hazel Dell mushrooms is famous throughout the region for its spectacular chanterelles and shiitake varieties. Join us in April 2012 and we'll take advantage of all that our fine city has to offer on this weekend cycling and feasting extravaganza.

    1. Day 1: April 28 - Welcome to Fort Collins, Colorado

Highlights: Eden Valley, Horsetooth Reservoir, brewery tour, rolling hills

We'll meet this morning between 8:30 and 9:15 AM at the ExperiencePlus! headquarters (210 E Oak St Ste C) and have a short safety talk and socializing before we start riding between 9:00 and 10 AM. We'll head west into the foothills of Fort Collins, and our first climb of three rewards us with beautiful views of Horsetooth Reservoir. We'll cruise along the reservoir to the small town of Stout, CO population 47 1/2; stop in for a beverage or snack before our next climb to the appropriately named "Perch". Once we reach Horsetooth Mountain Park we'll enjoy a long downhill to Masonville, CO -- enjoy a step back in time with a visit to the general store. Don't miss the jail cell on the south end of the building and stroll across the street to see the latest styles in western leather goods. Back on the bikes we are headed to the idyllic Eden Valley, home to organic farms and an eclectic mix of locals. If you are feeling strong you can extend the ride to Carter Lake but the rest of us will head back to Fort Collins along the Glade Road and then back to Horsetooth Reservoir. Whichever you choose remember we have a brewery tour scheduled this afternoon. We'll celebrate 40 years in style with a special birthday dinner tonight! Distance: 51 miles.

      Lodging: Armstrong Hotel

    2. Day 2: April 29 - Loop Ride from Fort Collins

Highlights: Bingham Hill, Bellvue Bean, Richards Lake

Enjoy a relaxing morning and breakfast with your fellow cyclists and the ExperiencePlus! family. Our ride today takes us northwest along the Poudre River bike path to the base of Bingham Hill, which is actually two hills, but who is counting? The views from the top of the second hill take in the entire Pleasant Valley, home to green pastures and horses - the setting is bucolic and peaceful. Bellevue has always been a popular destination for local cyclists and now with the opening of the Bellvue Bean, the spot is just that much sweeter. Stop in for a coffee, pastry and enjoy the hospitality. Back on the road we'll head east through more farmland and neighborhoods as we loop back to Fort Collins. We'll plan to be back in Fort Collins around noon and you'll be able to grab a shower before heading to the airport or home. Distance: 23 miles.
