Luigi’s Limoncello: Lemon liqueur

Luigi's Limoncello Lemon Liqueur from Italy

ExperiencePlus! customers on the Amalfi Coast hiking tour in October were treated to tour leader Luigi’s homemade limoncello (say "lee-moan-CHEL-lo") and raved about this tasty liqueur, so Luigi, a native of Capri, promised us his own recipe for it. While we can’t promise yours will be as good as Luigi’s, here it is:

  • 8 lemons

  • 1 quart of pure alcohol ( in US, substitute vodka )

  • 1 quart of water

  • 1 3/4 pounds of sugar

Remove a thin layer of lemon peel from the 8 lemons (leave the white part on the lemon); cover the peels with the alcohol for eight days. On the eighth day, put the water (minus a cup of it) to boil, add the sugar and boil for a few minutes before adding the remaining cup of water.

Let the water/sugar mixture cool. While that is cooling, filter the lemon/alcohol mixture with a cheesecloth or coffee filter.

Mix the two mixtures together, bottle and cool in the freezer before drinking.

You may store the limoncello in the freezer as you enjoy it slowly!

What should you do with the eight unpeeled lemons? Use the pulp of the lemons to make veal or chicken with lemon sauce or some good, refreshing lemonade!

Happy and safe holidays!
