Cycling Portugal – Treasures Aboundby ExperiencePlus! - Thursday, September 4, 2014
Join us for this remarkable new tour of Portugal’s Alentejo region that will have you pedaling a stone’s throw from the border of Spain and then crossing the width of Portugal to the captivating Atlantic coast. Your cycling and cultural explorations begin in Elvas where you’ll ride along Roman aqueducts and stay in a hotel literally built into the medieval walls of the city.
Roman, Arabic, Medieval and Renaissance influences abound and you’ll have the opportunity to learn more about the area’s history through its art, including tapestries and ceramics, museums, castles, and medieval cities. Foodies will delight with a variety of gastronomic explorations including a stay in a hotel that doubles a cooking school.
The country is literally overflowing with natural beauty that is easily accessed following smooth roads seemingly made for cycling. You’ll spin through white washed villages near Beja; fields of century old cork trees will enchant you with their scrubby vigor; and the awesome Costa Vicentina National Park’s remote and rugged landscape is simply captivating. You’ll discover secret pathways down apparent cliffs that lead to secluded and drop dead gorgeous beaches. The grand finale is the “end of the world” Europe’s most southwestern point which earned its name when the world was thought to be flat.
A fabulous variety of accommodations that include Portugal’s historic Pousada hotels, boutique hotels and coastal resorts that combine to make this trip particularly memorable.
Arrival and departure couldn’t be any simpler – we’ll meet you in Lisbon to shuttle to our tour start in Elvas and shuttle you back to Lisbon at the end of the tour.
