4 Tours Ideal for Spring Cycling

by Jessie Beyer - Monday, July 9, 2018

Not only do spring bicycle tours promise wild flowers, fields of green and ideal cycling weather, they are also a great excuse to kick start your base fitness level for the rest of the summer. Here are four bicycle tours guaranteed kick your 2019 cycling season into gear.

Bicycling Catalonia’s Costa Brava Plus! Barcelona

Start your spring (and cycling season) in Catalonia. You’ll begin your tour in the stunning city of Girona, one of the most fought after towns in all of Spanish history. While pedaling the Spanish countryside you’ll be surrounded by fields bursting with yellows and reds, accented by the bright green that screams, “it’s spring!” Travel along the Costa Brava and through the rolling hills of the Empordà region – dotted with Roman ruins and medieval towns. You’ll stop along the way and see hidden fishing villages and quiet walled towns bursting with life after the winter season. This region is renowned for its artists, culinary creativity, architectural and natural treasures. The “Plus!” tour has an extraordinary end as you pedal into the hills before finding bike paths that take you directly into Barcelona, one of Europe’s most-loved cities.

A few highlights to look forward to:  Girona, Figueras and Dali Museum, Medieval Villages, Costa Brava beaches, Barcelona, extraordinary food – Girona has more restaurants with Michelin stars then anywhere else in the world!

Join our 8-day Bicycling Catalonia’s Costa Brava or make it a 12-day tour and join Bicycling Catalonia’s Costa Brava Plus! Barcelona.

Cycling Hidden Tuscany Plus! Tufa Towns

The Etruscans gave Tuscany its name but through the renaissance and after the classical age the epicenter of Tuscany moved to the valley of the Arno River to the north of Siena – to Florence. This area of (southern) Tuscany was largely forgotten–until today. Modern Italians tend to be secretive about the charms of this scenic area and its old-world villages, historical sites, and exceptional landscapes- which happen to be bursting with color in the spring.

Cycle through important Tuscan towns including Volterra and San Gimignano, visit smaller gems like Massa Marittima and the fishing port of Castiglione della Pescaia, enjoy spa hotels (our favorite is located near the important Etruscan site of Populonia).

A few highlights to look forward to: Fabulous Tuscan food built from a base of olive oil, tomatoes, basil and rosemary, thermal spas, ridge rides looking out across vineyards, cypress and olive trees, the Tyrrhenian Sea, Etruscan ruins, two 2-night stays in Volterra, San Gimignano.
