Welcome to the November 2011 ExperiencePlus! Rambler

View pool side at La Mansion in Costa Rica

Dear Folks – we were hit by a surprise snow storm last week, and then another one on Wednesday here in Colorado. Electrical outages seem to be the norm across the country due to these early storms.  Maybe this is a stark reminder that winter is around the corner and now is the perfect time to plan your escape! We can help! How about a trip to Chile or Argentina, or combine the two in Patagonia? Of course, our classic tours in Costa Rica could also be the perfect ticket and we have numerous departure dates throughout the winter. Hot springs, rain forests, rafting, swimming pools and great bicycling await.

We have wrapped up the 2011 European cycling season strong this year and are also very excited to get a head start on the 2012 season. We have a number of confirmed departures and tours with just a few spaces left already for next year as the Early Booking Discount ended on Monday – thank you to all of our early planners!

As we ready ourselves for 2012 and our 40th year, we decided it would be great fun to throw a bicycling birthday bash… here in Fort Collins. Stay tuned but the initial idea is a two day ride, perhaps a brewery tour (we must visit the local specialty gourmet shops after all!) and, of course, plenty of good food to celebrate our anniversary and to kick off the summer bicycling season. So Save the Date – May 5 and 6th, 2012 and stay tuned for more details.

Other celebratory specials  include our Photo Contest that is ongoing and has a grand prize of a free tour – check out for more information. And, last but not least – have you been dreaming of taking home your very own titanium bicycle? Visit us on Facebook and click on the Sweepstakes tab – to enter to win a bicycle or take home an ExperiencePlus! Bicycle Gift Package that includes a jersey and one of our great rear rack packs!

Until next month, happy cycling and stay warm,

Maria Elena and Monica Malpezzi Price

PS: For those who know our Senior Tour Leaders John Giebler and France Country Coordinator Extraordinaire Jonathan Hancock – we are excited to announce that they both got married just this past October! We are so excited for both of them, and wish them well in this new adventure.

Winter Tour Updates: South America

Although we may feel like we have perfected each and every bicycle tour itinerary we offer, over the years we’ve learned that more often than not they are a work in progress.   This is certainly true for some very exciting additions and changes we’re making to our popular North America winter getaway bicycling destinations, Chile and Argentina.

Read our brief update on changes and improvements to these two bicycle tours in South America.

Accommodations We Love: Part 2

The garden of the Le Mas de Guilles on the ExperiencePlus! trips in Provence.

Join ExperiencePlus! in the Piemonte region of Italy and stay in the former castle of the Caccia family. Or perhaps you’d prefer sitting poolside at an agriturismo, or working farm, in Sicily where you’ll feast on fresh food harvested on site and enjoy wine from the vineyard? A dip in the Adriatic is just a few steps away from the Hotel Pastura on the island of Brač in Croatia. Not to be out done Jean-Noel, our host in Rogliano, Corsica offers a great restaurant and views of the Mediterranean. And if you prefer Provence — Le Mas de Guilles, a 17th century farmhouse, is day’s ride from Aix-en-Provence.

Training for an ExpeditionPlus! tour

ExpeditionPlus! trips with ExperiencePlus! offer cyclists the opportunity to challenge themselves physically, and mentally on a transcontinental journey. The August 15 – September 29, 2012 St. Petersburg, Russia to Istanbul, Turkey Expedition sold out in just a few months though there is a wait list available. These trips feature long mileage days and countless feet of elevation gain so riders must take extra steps to prepare physically. Mary Gantz has completed four ExpeditionPlus! trips and is a certified personal trainer, yoga and Pilates instructor as well as a body tone coach and we asked her for the secrets behind her successful cycling career.

Check out Mary’s ExpeditionPlus! Training Tips.

Cooler nights are perfect for watching movies! Try Evita, one of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s finest works, a film that retells modern Argentinean history in song.  Interested? This film review may further pique your interest…

Daube Provençale or Beef Stew with Wine

Daube Provencal

This month’s recipe comes to us from Josette Smyrl who coordinated hotels and meals for ExperiencePlus! tours for years. Now retired and living near Aix-en-Provence with her gardening husband Sam. Josette occasionally takes the time to share from her treasure trove of excellent recipes.

Enjoy Josette’s version of Daube Provençale.

Happy Cycling until next month!
