Welcome to the April 2012 ExperiencePlus! Rambler

Happy Spring!

We’ve been enjoying sunny weather for two months in Colorado, but now that May has arrived we can embrace that it is here to stay.   We finished April and kicked May off with a weekend bicycling bash here in Fort Collins to celebrate the 40th anniversary of our inaugural tour.  Forty plus people joined us for a weekend of socializing, riding, eating, swag, and imbibing. Bicycling stories and travel memories were shared, a few myths were dispelled, discoveries about the first few tours learned (who knew the first tour rode 4-speed bicycles!)…..and a great time was had by all. We want to thank all who joined us while others sent good wishes from afar. Who is ready to make this an annual event? Enjoy a few snapshots from the weekend and let us know if you’d enjoy joining us in the future.

We’ve seen a flurry of activity on many of our fall tours as people begin to plan their late summer and early fall vacations.  Many trips are selling out in late August and September, so if you’ve been thinking about one let us know as we wouldn’t want you to be shut out!

This month in our newsletter we have some very fun news to share.  We have the 2012  S.A.T.T. (Send a Teacher Traveling) winner! And, just for our loyal Rambler readers, we’re sharing a sneak peak at 2013 NEW itineraries.  Also in this issue a recap of an article on our favorite Italian region (Emilia Romagna) and a scrumptious recipe for Crème Brûlée.  And last but not least, Rick Price offers some reading tips for anyone looking to teach their kids (or grand-kids) bike safety.

We hope that wherever you are this May brings you new beginnings and sunny skies (and tailwinds!)

Until next month, happy cycling –
Maria Elena and Monica

P.S. For any budding photographers (or professional photographers) out there Monica and ExperiencePlus! founder, Paola will be directing a photography workshop (no bicycling) on Lake Como from August 21 – 31.   This workshop was started by a dear Price family friend and photographer, Holly Smith Pedlosky and in 2012 will be instructed by world class digital photographer guru George Jardine.

Via Emilia – road to Italian culinary history

Parmesan in brine bicycling touring in Emilia Romagna with ExperiencePlus!

Today, the updated Via Emilia (SS9 on motoring maps) is Italy’s equivalent of Highway 49. Transecting the region called Emilia-Romagna, it’s a conduit linking the past and present. Before signing on for a bicycle tour of the province, I’d never even heard of Emilia-Romagna. But it so happens that everything I love about Italian cuisine, from pancetta to parmesan, originated along this ancient road.

Continue this culinary exploration of Emilia Romagna with writer Jeff Greenwald in an article that originally appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Send A Teacher Traveling Winner Announced

Read Aloud Books Help Teach Bicycle Safety to Children by Rick Price

I’ve been having a ton of fun teaching kids bicycle safety the last three years.  In the local Safe Routes to School Program the Bike Co-op has had contracts for three years now to teach bike safety in several schools each year.  I’ve had to invent fun ways to get our message across.  One way I’ve discovered is read aloud children’s bicycle books.  Books like Franklin rides a Bike, The Bear’s Bicycle  and many others have great messages for kids.

Read more ideas from Rick on how to teach bicycle safety to children.

Recipe: Crème Brûlée

When you travel to France, chances are you’ve got some culinary must-tastes on your list. While crepes and the delicately-crafted pastries in the corner patisseries are delightful, one dessert you must try is crème brûlée. The translation of this dessert is “burnt cream,” but don’t let that deter you from tasting this custard treat, or in today’s case, trying to make it yourself.

And now one of our favorite recipes for crème brûlée.

Happy Cycling until next month!
