Welcome to the August 2012 ExperiencePlus! Rambler

Happy Summer!

We aren’t sure where July went – but after one of the warmest months on record in Colorado, we’re ready for it to cool off for an August that is going to be full of adventures.  The office in Colorado is busy updating our website and tour schedules with European 2013 trip dates and prices.  We have published our new tour itineraries for Slovenia and Catalonia, with an itinerary in Ireland on its way.  Our goal is to complete the calendar in the next few weeks, so if you are hoping to sign on early for a tour that was sold out this year – we should have everything posted by mid-August.

In Europe, the second part of the season is kicking into high gear.  We still have a few spots left on some late fall departures, so if you are a late planner – we may have something still available – give us a call or email us (!

This month in the newsletter we are featuring a report from the field from a traveler who joined us on the 40th Anniversary tour as well as a report from a traveler on our Camino de Santiago trip as he writes via the new ExperiencePlus! Travel Journal website Pedal Press.  See more below for each of these trip reports as well as a review on a book that interviews Women of the Way (including Maria Elena Price in one chapter and our bike traveler Lindy Fergusson!)

In Colorado this month we are also gearing up for another wedding! Maria Elena is marrying her long time fiancé, Seth. Monica, Michele, and baby Lidia are in Colorado for a brief few weeks before heading back to Italy to continue sending tour leaders and bikes off on tour.   Even if July zipped by, we’re sure that August is shaping up to be memorable.  Whatever your plans are this month, we wish you the best.

40th Anniversary Bike Across Italy – Traveler’s Report

Tamsen relaxes in Chioggia before our boat to the islands

“I just got back from the ExperiencePlus! 40th Anniversary Bike Across Italy Tour – Pisa to Venice- what a trip! It was 12 days of extraordinary food, fun, sights, and, oh yes, rides in the company of founders, Rick and Paola, current owners Monica and Maria Elena, fabulous guides Cristina, Sara and Lisa, and a terrific troop of guests from all over the world. My husband, Dan, and I returned to suburban New Jersey invigorated and well-rested with the best souvenirs: choice memories of new friends, exquisite views and the glow of personal achievements…”

Read Tamsen’s trip report from her recent tour in Italy where she joined and met many ExperiencePlus! staff and past travelers as we all celebrated our 40th Anniversary. Read more about her trip on her blog post.

Guy Cunningham joined ExperiencePlus! on the June 1 – 15, 2012 departure of the Camino de Santiago – Roncesvalles to Santiago and fortunately for all of us he kept a delightful journal of his experiences along the way.

Book Review: Women of the Way by Jane V Blanchard

The Land of Painted Caves by Jean Auel

Women of the Way describes Jane V. Blanchard’s 2011 pilgrimage across Spain on the Camino de Santiago. That year more than 44% of the pilgrims were women, each with a different story. As the author walked, she talked with other female pilgrims to see what motivated them to undertake this adventure. She relates their compelling stories in their own words so other woman can understand and, perhaps, become empowered to do likewise, whether it be a physical journey or one of the spirit

Recipe: Kale Greek Salad

Kale Greek Salad

Kale packs a punch, many believe it to be a perfect food, packed with antioxidants, vitamin C and K, high in lutein and beta carotene. But, many folks just don’t know what to do with the stuff so since kale is in season we thought we’d help.

Look no further — check out Julie’s Kale Greek Salad
