Welcome to the August 2011 ExperiencePlus! Rambler

Dear Folks,

It is an exciting time here at ExperiencePlus!. In Colorado we’re busy The support vehicle and first ExperiencePlus! Bike Across Italy grouppreparing for winter departures in Latin America and coordinating with the office in Europe for our 2012 season. Speaking of 2012, there is much to look forward to including new itineraries in France, Italy and the Czech Republic – AND we are planning a birthday party – ExperiencePlus! is turning 40!   We will be soliciting your assistance in coming up with 40 (or more) ways to celebrate,  but Number 1 on the list is the very special 40th Anniversary, Bike Across Italy trip from Pisa to Venice – the ride that started it all back in 1972. Read more in this newsletter and be sure to check our website this month as we are posting dates and prices for 2012 European departures daily. For now we’d like to introduce you to a few new tours in the Languedoc and Provence regions of France, the Lakes District and Emilia Romagna in Italy.

We have just launched the first-ever ExperiencePlus! photo contest– submit some of your favorite travel photos for your chance to win a Free ExperiencePlus! tour. And be sure to have your friends vote for your submission(s) in the online gallery – the People’s Choice Award is an iPad.

In the news –Our Bike, Hike and Paddle multi-sport trip in Costa Rica was recently featured in the LA Times. And in Colorado – The USA Cycling Pro Challenge bike race is coming and ExperiencePlus! will be at the Steamboat Springs’ beginning and ending  stages on August 26th and 27th. Join us to watch Tour de France winner, Cadel Evans along with second and third place finishers, Andy and Frank Schleck race through the mountains of Colorado. We’ll have swag and you’ll have the chance to meet and chat with our staff. Join us for this monumental cycling event.

Until next month,

Monica and Maria Elena Malpezzi Price

Four Favorite Tour Leaders

Tour Leader training at the ExperiencePlus! headquarters in Italy

With the announcement of our 40th Anniversary Bike Across Italy trip we thought it the perfect time to feature a few of the tour leaders who have been with us the longest, Mario Cordero, Yorgos Paraskevopoulos, John Giebler, and Cristina Taioli.

Book Review: Labyrinth by Kate Mosse

ExperiencePlus! has a new 2012 itinerary that features the Languedoc and the Catalonia regions of France and though Kate Mosse’s Labyrinth is fiction it is the perfect introduction to some of the fascinating history of the area including the Albigensian Crusade.

Read Monica’s review of Labyrinth.

Recipe: Piadina or Flatbread

Piadina lesson at the Casa Artusi in Forlimpopoli

One of the specialties from Paola’s region in Italy is Piadina Romagnola (flatbread from Romagna). At a recent cooking demonstration at one of the premier cooking institutes in Emilia Romagna we learned the secrets for making perfect piadina.  This great bread can serve as a base for just about any topping you prefer but we recommend fresh cheese and prosciutto (and a bit of rucola/arugula if you have it as well!)

Here’s Casa Artusi’s recipe for piadina.

Happy Cycling until next month!
