It was the summer of 1971 when our love for bicycling in Italy began. That summer, Rick and Paola pedaled from Pisa to Paola's hometown of Forli just for fun. Afterward, Rick said, "You know, I'll bet other people would enjoy taking this ride with us!" An idea was born and the very next year we ran our first bicycle tour in Italy. Our Pisa to Venice tour replicates that first ride by Rick and Paola. You'll visit Tuscan villages, explore the wonders of great art cities like Florence and Venice, and even pay a visit to Paola's family farm for a picnic lunch and a walk through the vineyards. Complement all of this with meals from two of Italy's premier pasta regions and you'll understand why this remains one of our, and our customers', favorite tours. Rick and Paola will be on the trip, and the sisters, Maria Elena and Monica, will also join for a portion of the ride too!
***There is still more fun to be had and more of Italy to explore. Extend your cycling vacation with our Bicycling Venice and the Dolomites tour.***
Day 1: Tour begins in Lucca, Italy
Highlights: 17th century wall, welcome dinner at a trattoria
Arrive this afternoon at our hotel in Lucca, where we'll fit bicycles. Lucca was a Roman town and one of medieval Italy's most prosperous city-states. Today, Lucca retains its medieval charm with its small shops and sidewalk cafés. Our hotel, is centrally located, so take a walk or ride on the 17th-century wall that surrounds town before we gather for a glass of wine and a welcome dinner at a favorite trattoria this evening.Lodging: Hotel La Luna and Alla Dimora Lucense
Day 2: Pisa
Highlights: Leaning Tower of Pisa, Piazza of Miracles, Lake Massaciuccoli
Our first day of pedaling takes us to Pisa where you can visit the Leaning Tower and the Piazza of Miracles. Our route to Pisa takes us by Lake Massaciuccoli, where Puccini wrote many of his operas. Day 3: Birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci

You'll arrive in Vinci mid-afternoon with time to visit a museum with scale models of Leonardo's inventions, or to ride the 13 km to San Baronto - a ride that some customers have called the most beautiful they have ever taken. Dinner together. Distance: 57-84 km (36-52.5 miles).Lodging: Hotel Monna Lisa
Day 4: Florence
Highlights: Olive groves and vineyards, bicycle into Renaissance Florence
Terraced hillsides of olive groves and vineyards line our route today as you climb gently over Monte Albano. From there, you'll enjoy spectacular views of the Arno River valley. At sunset, take a walk down to the Ponte Vecchio to engage in the passeggiata (or "evening stroll") before dinner on your own.Lodging: Hotel Balestri
Day 6: Fiesole and the Apennine mountains
Highlights: Fiesole's Etruscan ruins and views of Florence, mountain town
Leaving Florence we pedal together to the ancient Etruscan village of Fiesole. We'll enjoy a light lunch before heading off to Ravenna, the last capital of the Western Roman Empire. Ravenna is famous for its mosaics. Plan to visit some of its historic sites, including Dante's tomb, St. Apollinare in Classe and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, this afternoon. Our hotel is right in the center of town, making it easy for you to explore. Dinner is on your own this evening. Distance: 55 km (34 miles).Lodging: Palazzo Galletti Abbiosi Hotel
Day 9: Ferrara
Highlights: Lunch at farm cooperative, Comacchio, bicycle capital of Italy--Ferrara

On our way, it's a leisurely ride across the "valleys of Comacchio (the name given to the marshes surrounding the town)". These marshes make up a part of the Po Delta's rich bird habitats. Like Venice, Comacchio was built on a series of islands and it retains similar charms with gondolas plying the city's many canals. We'll shuttle from here to our destination today: Ferrara, a city known as the bicycle capital of Italy. We highly recommend taking some time to explore the town and its UNESCO World Heritage sites. You'll follow these natural levees to reach our hotel on the Lido. Once at our hotel, you'll have time to head into town for an afternoon of sightseeing. Stroll St. Mark's Square and visit the Rialto Market, or take a gondola ride down the Grand Canal. Tonight we'll enjoy a final dinner together tucked away in Venice.
