Bicycle Tours in Italy: Little Bicycle Tour of Tuscany

This is the bicycle tour of Tuscany you've been looking for, a delightful 8-day ride through some of the western world's most beautiful landscapes. From the Renaissance hub of Florence, you'll bicycle west to Vinci - birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci - and then south into the low hills of western Tuscany. Our bike tour includes two nights in the fairytale town of San Gimignano, where you can use your day off to relax, or to ride to the preserved hill top town of Certaldo Alto. We end the tour in Lucca, a forgotten walled city that will make you want to stay just a bit longer as you savor the true taste of Italy.

Day 1: Arrive Florence, Italy

Highlights: Florence, Uffizi Gallery, Michelangelo's David

We meet at our base hotel in Florence today, where we'll fit bicycles this afternoon. Located on the Arno River, with an eye toward the Ponte Vecchio, our hotel is a perfect spot from which to begin your explorations of Florence. We'll enjoy an inaugural dinner together this evening in a local trattoria.

Day 2: Bicycle Florence to Vinci

Highlights: Etruscan tombs, vineyards of Tuscany, Leonardo da Vinci museum

We leave late-morning for our ride west to Vinci. We'll pedal out of town together, and then you can ride at your own pace. On our way, you'll pedal by the Etruscan tombs of Comeana. In Vinci, you should plan to visit Leonardo's museum where you'll see the replica of his 16th-century bicycle (only 300 years ahead of his time). Some of you may also want to take an optional ride to San Baronto, described by many of our customers as the most beautiful ride they've ever taken. Dinner on your own tonight. Distance: 45 km (28 miles), plus 22 km (14 miles) optional.

Day 3: Bicycle Vinci to San Gimignano

Highlights: Chianti vineyards, 16th-century Medici villa, San Gimignano

Our first stop today is Cerreto Guidi, where you can climb the stairway of the 16th-century Medici villa for a great view of the valley. Then we continue on to the hilltop town of San Miniato, before heading into the hills near San Gimignano. Enjoy a picnic with a view of the Chianti hills in the distance. We'll be in the hill towns of San Gimignano where we'll enjoy dinner together. Distance: 50-61 km (31-38 miles).

Day 4: Rest day in San Gimignano

Highlights: San Gimignano, optional ride through Chianti hills

Take a rest today if you'd like, or take an optional ride to Certaldo, where Boccaccio, one of Italy's most famous writers, spent the last years of his life. Dinner is on your own this evening. Distance: 0-26 km (0-16 miles).

Day 5: Bicycle San Gimignano to Volterra

Highlights: Volterra, Etruscan and Roman ruins

We continue west today to Volterra, one of Italy's most famous Etruscan towns. Those who wish can explore the rugged hills of southern Tuscany while the rest of us arrive in Volterra for some sightseeing. You'll want to visit the Etruscan museum and both the Etruscan and Roman ruins on your own this afternoon. Dinner together. Distance: 35-80 km (22-50 miles).

Day 6: Bicycle the hills of western Tuscany

Highlights: Medieval Towns

We'll ride down from the top of Volterra today and towards the Arno river valley that connects Florence and Pisa. The rolling hills of western Tuscany take us to Lari, home of the Martelli Pasta factory on our way to our country hotel. Enjoy a swim, or relax poolside before our dinner together this evening. Distance: 65 - 70 kms (40 - 42 miles).

Day 7: Ride to Lucca

Highlights: Walled city of Lucca

Once in Lucca we recommend riding the 17th-century wall that surrounds the city as an introduction to exploring the town. You can also climb the medieval tower with the trees on top for a great view. Dinner together tonight. Distance: 40 km (24 miles).

Day 8: Bicycle Tour Ends

Highlights: Tour ends in Lucca

You are on your own today after breakfast in our hotel. How about a day or two lounging in the villages of the Cinque Terre just north of La Spezia? Or a trip back to Florence or on to Rome? Whatever your choice, have a great trip. Perhaps we'll see you in Italy again soon!
