Croatia has one of the most dramatic coastlines in the Mediterranean region. The Dinaric Alps plunge right into the sea, fracturing into a series of islands stretching the full length of the Dalmatian Coast.
Historically the region was caught among the maritime empire of Venice, the landlocked Austro-Hungarian empire, and the Ottoman Empire which spanned both land and sea. As a result, the cultural heritage of the region bears the fruits of all three of these cultures. The culinary traditions show the best of this heritage, the architecture is purely Mediterranean, and the historical remnants date back to Roman times, though the region is rich in Medieval and Renaissance villages, cities, and architecture.
