Welcome to the October 2008 ExperiencePlus! Rambler E-Mail Newsletter

Dear Folks,

As days get shorter and the garden harvest dwindles maybe you are dreamingThe Price family this summer in Vienna. about keeping warm this winter.  We can help.  Just as chopping wood warms you twice, so does bicycle touring!  So start thinking “Southern Hemisphere” in December, January or February.  Then get out and warm up with some training rides so you’ll enjoy pedaling over the Andes, through the wine regions of Chile or Argentina or across Costa Rica.   (Paola’s recipe this month is a delicious little pastry from Argentina.)

Through our TourzPlus! programs we also offer New Zealand, Australia and Vietnam as well as a new tour in India (OK, not the southern hemisphere, but a great place to bicycle in December or January.)

Don’t let this one slip by:  our early booking discounts for 2009 allow you to save $150 per person ($300 per couple) between now and November 15th. We are offering only 75 discounted spots so register now to take advantage of this opportunity.  Also, don’t forget about your Re-Cycle Discount.  You can’t have BOTH a Re-Cycle discount and an early booking discount so do the math and give us a call to get one of our limited number of discounted spots in 2009.  Yes, just as the airlines limit frequent flyer space we limit the numbers of Re-Cycle discounts on each tour and for the calendar year; click here for details.  So study your options and give us a call this week or next.

Things change.  That’s no surprise.  So you shouldn’t be surprised to learn that our two daughters, Monica and Maria Elena, are taking over ExperiencePlus! at the end of this month. Paola will stay as head of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Colorado State University and Rick will be part-time consultant and occasional tour leader for the “new” ExperiencePlus! while spending more time working on local bicycle advocacy issues.

Monica will continue to direct all the international operations of the company from her base in Italy and Maria Elena will manage customer service, sales and marketing from the office here in Fort Collins while finishing her MBA.  And our faithful office staff in Fort Collins will still be here to help you.  If you have any wild tour ideas just send them along – more than likely Rick will work with you to make them happen!  Keep in touch.  We’ll do the same!

Sincerely,

Rick & Paola Malpezzi Price

2009 Features Some of the Best Bicycle Tours Ever

Whether it is winter cycling in India, numerous destinations in the Southern Hemisphere or spring and summer tours in Europe, we’ve got a full palette of tours for you in 2009!  Just click onto our Tour Finder and pick your destination or date to begin the process – let your fingers do the walking, as the old yellow pages ad used to tell us.  (Maybe today it’s the mouse that will lead the way!)

Don’t know where to start?  Here are just a few ideas.

Try Argentina’s north country or Chile’s wine country for a great introduction to Latin America. Explore Sicily and then Turkey in April 2009 – you’ll fall in love with Mediterranean food and you’ll jump start your ’09 cycling season.

Italy’s Puglia and Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast are another option for those of you who prefer two tours in a row.

The alternatives to these great Southern European tours are our classic Italian, French and Spanish tours.  If you’ve not cycled Coastal Tuscany, the Camino de Santiago or France’s Dordogne River Valley you really need to take a look at these trips.  And of course, this assumes you’ve already done our original Bike Across Italy from Venice to Pisa or Venice to Florence.

Looking for an easy trip to bring those friends who are just beginning bicycle touring?  Then have a look at our new Hidden Italy: Bicycling the Art Cities of Northern ItalyCoastal Tuscany, Venice to Pisa, the Culinary Cycling Circus, Cycling Provence, and France’s Loire Valley.

And if you are looking for some racing excitement join Lance Armstrong in France this summer. We will offer two opportunities for you to ride the classic routes of the French Pyrenees or Alps, and view some mountain stages of the greatest cycling event in the world. Email or call us now to get on the list and we'll contact you once the race routes have been announced and our itineraries are finalized.

Still don’t know where to start?  Send a note or give us a call.  We’re full of ideas!

An Interview With Our Costa Rican Tour Leader and Country Coordinator, Mario Cordero

Mario Cordero

Mario has been leading tours and coordinating our trips in Costa Rica since 1993. We recently took a few moments to catch up on his life in Costa Rica.

Care to share a favorite wildlife viewing or encounter story with us?  Could be the Margay (a small wild feline) taking a nap in the fork of a tree as we hiked by earlier this year.

Or the Laughing Falcon catching a snake...

Book Review
Wheels of Chance: A Bicycling Idyll by H.G. Wells

"The Wheels of Chance"

Rick steps back in time with this review of H.G. Wells, The Wheels of Chance: A Bicycling Idyll (First published in 1896).

The «golden age » of the bicycle spanned the decade of the 1890s, the capstone of the Victorian era and the decade that preceded the first mass-produced automobiles.  The new “safety” bicycle, with wheels of equal size, replaced the more dangerous high-wheel or penny farthing which had dominated the bicycle craze for two decades.  The safety opened up the world of personal mobility to far wider range of people than the high-wheel had allowed.  All of a sudden, adventuresome older people and less athletic men and women could ride a bicycle.

From Paola's Kitchen
Pastelitos (Small Pastries)

Pastelitos (Small Pastries) from Argentina from flickr.com/photos/pelekool/315181657/

We have a number of departures that take you through (or across!) Argentina and the recipe for these delicious pastries comes to us from a colleague of Paola's from Buenos Aires. Pastelitos are fried and have lots of butter so  they will not qualify for a heart healthy diet, but splurge and you'll find divine inspiration to book a trip to Argentina!

Click here to read the rest of Paola's Pastelitos recipe.

If you would like additional recipes, visit our online recipe archive. You'll find recipes for European and Latin American specialties like Panzanella: a Tuscan Salad, Tapenade, Gallo Pinto, and more.
