Welcome to the March 2008 ExperiencePlus! Rambler E-Mail Newsletter

Dear Folks,

The Piazza Colonna and Palazzo Chigi, the Prime Minister's office, on the Ides of March Spring is trying to break through here in Colorado and in Europe. I was in Italy two weeks ago and our headquarters at the farm in Italy was beautiful: the peaches, plums and apricot trees were in full bloom. Springtime is one of the best times to visit Europe. Think about joining us in May on one of our Tuscany trips, in Croatia, on the Camino de Santiago in Spain or on our Bike, Walk and Cruise in Greece as we still have space. The wild flowers will be spectacular.

If you are up for some serious, long distance bicycle rides our Danube ExpeditionPlus! June 26th is guaranteed to go. We'd love to have you join us in late June. We'll be announcing our South American Expeditions in the coming weeks, including our Coast to Coast ride across Chile and Argentina, and a new high Andes trip that will start in Chile, drop into Bolivia and cross Argentina to Buenos Aires.

If you are worried about the price of foreign travel with the dollar in the doldrums, take heart with the following. The price we've quoted for all 2008 European tours is firm and you are protected against any currency rate changes. So what you see is what you pay. On our tours you get all your lodging, all your breakfasts, and about 70% of dinners, including wine. What about lunches? How about a picnic and a gelato? You'll have a few dinners to cover but we'll teach you where to find the best authentic pizza and salads, where the locals eat. The only thing that is left is ice cream and beer. Ice cream (gelato!) is still better in Italy and less expensive than in the US! And while the beer may be a little more expensive than it is in the US, it's better beer (unless you live in Fort Collins).

Here are some other ideas on cutting costs but not cutting your bicycle travel:

  • Take a look at our US tour offerings - there are a lot available through our TourzPlus! Program
  • How about a bike + villa or bike + hotel? Take a look at our offerings through www.BikeRentalsPlus.com
  • Self-guided tours are becoming all the rage; we'll set one up for you in Italy (Tuscany, Puglia, or Emilia Romagna) or France (Loire Valley or Provence)

Rick at the Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, just north of Rome Don't let the dollar doldrums get you down. Give us a call today and we'll help you get out on that bike this spring or summer! (Click here for some local spring training rides in Colorado and plan to join the ExperiencePlus! MS 150 team in Colorado, June 28 & 29).

Happy cycling,

Rick and Paola Price

Two Epic Journeys by Bike

The medieval streets of a rural Galician village, where the pilgrim history lies a little closer to the surface. Our featured tours this month are bicycle tours writ large, following historic routes nearly the whole way across Spain and France:

The Camino de Santiago crosses northern Spain from near the French border to Compostella on the west coast, following a route that dates back almost to the time of Charlemagne:

This is one of the most important historic journeys in Europe -- a pilgrimage route turned cultural icon.

Our other feature follows the historic route of the first woman to bicycle around the world from Paris to France over a century ago:

Annie Cohen Kopchovsky set out in June of 1894 to become the first woman to bicycle around the world. Using the pseudonym "Annie Londonderry," Annie's first foreign leg was from Paris to Marseille in the winter of 1894/95.

An Interview With Nikki Hatton

Nikki Hatton traveling the world This month's interview comes from Nikki Hatton. Over to you, Nikki:

What is the most unique or meaningful souvenir you've ever brought home from an ExperiencePlus! tour or from another trip? Memories - Best of all was on the Dordogne tour: We were passing by an ancient gentleman who was digging potatoes in the plot next to his home, accompanied by his dog. When my daughter and I stopped to take a picture. He pantomimed for her to wait, then carefully rearranged his dog and the woven basket in which he was placing the potatoes to give her a better composition. Who says the French aren't friendly?

Book Review
War in the Val d'Orcia by Iris Origo.

War in the Val d'Orcia by Iris Origo This month, Rick reviews a memoir from an American expatriate living in southern Tuscany during World War Two:

From her vantage point in Southern Tuscany Iris Origo stole a little time almost every day to write her descriptions of what was happening around her. Her entries are precise, concise, wonderfully descriptive of daily life and often speculative when news was hard to get.
