Statement to EVSAG ( the Fort Collins Economic Vitality and Sustainability Action Group)Presented by Rick Price, Thursday, May 26, 2005Contact 484-8489; Rick@ExperiencePlus.com I'm a small business owner here in Fort Collins. My business is selling bicycle and walking tours around the world. Our offices are located at the very north end of Mason Street right on Martinez Park. I'm here to call your attention to a threat to the quality of life in Fort Collins that could have long term impacts on economic vitality and sustainability. The threat is that we might lose our Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator position, a position that was frozen when Betsy Jacobsen left last year to work for CDOT. Note that I find it interesting that the front page of this group's July 8, 2004 Report and Recommendations to City Council features TWO PEDESTRIANS on the cover. We have a great pedestrian and bicycle friendly city. It would not take much money to continue to fund a Bike and Pedestrian Coordinator's position. That position could be tied to an existing position, it seems to me (I suggest it be linked to bicycle and pedestrian Traffic Planning within Transportation Services). In your report you've suggested: 1) That people be encouraged to "Shop Fort Collins first" - pedestrians and cyclists would do just that. 2) That we focus on the uniqueness of Down Town as a cultural destination with its links to the Poudre Trail - bikes and pedestrians again 3) That we weave natural areas into the community and trail system - again 4) That we review, promote and protect City facilities, amenities and infrastructure for active retirees - one more reason to unfreeze and Bike-Pedestrian coordinator's position. I ask this committee to create a Task Force right now to advise City Council on the role that a City Bike and Pedestrian Coordinator would play in promoting Economic Vitality and Sustainability in this city over long term. I'd be glad to help with that. Thank you.
