“As Pretty As It Gets” ~ Cycling Bavaria’s Romantic Road

Ride Across The Land of Storybook Villages To the Base of the Austrian Alps

“This is as pretty as a tour can get” says Joan Escosura, Tour Manager of Germany, Spain, and Portugal, when referring to our two Bavarian cycling tours.  “It’s like cycling through a fairy tale landscape.”

It’s true. Our 201 cycling tour along Bavaria’s justly heralded Romantic Road is a storybook cycling journey through a landscape that’s been deeply etched into the world’s consciousness by the collective influence of the Brothers Grimm, Walt Disney, Harry Potter and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.  So if you crave excellent riding on a relatively easy tour through a truly spellbinding and romantic landscape that international travelers say is “quintessentially” German, this is the tour for you.

The Cycling Experience in Bavaria

A 201 tour, designed for pleasant sightseeing and riding,  our Bicycling Bavaria’s Backroads tour is just strenuous enough for the average cyclist so that one can still feast on Beer, Wurst and Brotchen without too much guilt. It features green valleys, emerald lakes, lush rolling hills, majestic mountains, blue skies and fuzzy white clouds. You’ll ride from the famous vineyards of Wursten, through gentle hills, bucolic vales and picture perfect medieval villages up into the beauty of the Austrian Alps and mad Ludwig’s famous Neuschwanstein castle.  All the way you’ll pedal along riverside trails and safe and serene back roads designed to keep traffic and the hum of modernity away.  Cycling the Romantic Road in Bavaria, is truly a fairy tale ride.

Food, Culture and Heimat

When you think of Germany in your mind’s eye, what do you see?  Alpine images of children in Lederhosen, handsome women bearing steins of beer, and stout men devouring bratwurst and pretzels to the sound of a polka?  If so, then you are really thinking of Bavaria.  If you like beer, consider that Bavaria has more breweries than towns. If you crave culture, it houses the most museums in Germany. If you need nature, it features the highest mountain, the Zugspitze, and two of the largest lakes in  Lake Chiemsee and Lake Starnberg! And of course, the clincher: scenes for the Harry Potter movies were shot in Rothenburg ob der Tauber where we stay two nights on our Bicycle Bavaria tours.

Heimat. This word not only references the place a person is from, but it implies a cozy feeling of belonging, a strong emotion of community and of maintaining a feeling of unique and unifying identity. This identification runs strong in Bavaria and it is palpable in the special atmosphere that is still alive in the quaint and original villages, the vibrant and sleek cities – both of which are still full of history. You might think you are wandering through a fairy-tale as you walk or pedal through the beautifully preserved streets that contain so many stories. And then, around the corner you’ll find yourself in front of a sleek and modern futuristic building that somehow manages to fit in! Bavaria is spellbinding, ancient, modern, and special.
