by Monica - Thursday, January 6, 2011 scotland

ExperiencePlus!’s bicycling trip across Scotland was born of customer requests to offer a cycling itinerary in the United Kingdom, and what an option this Coast to Coast trip is! Scotland is Europe’s leading adventure travel destination with good reason. A tremendous variety of terrain and scenic cycling routes, hearty food, friendly locals, cozy accommodations, tasty whiskey and beer — what more could a bicycle travelers ask for? This Coast to Coast bicycling tour across Scotland has all this plus stunning views of some of the highest peaks in the UK (almost 4000 feet!).

This cycling extravaganza offers you the opportunity to bicycle across Scotland from east to west which is a worthwhile experience in itself. But there is so much more to the journey as you find yourself riding through centuries of noble history with plenty of chances to enjoy Scottish culture. We’ll offer the opportunity to visit a woolen mill, a smokehouse, Corgarff Castle, and numerous colorful pubs along the way! Pedal along rivers that feature salmon migrating to their spawning grounds nine months of the year. Bicycle past the Royal Summer Residence of Balmoral, where Queen Elizabeth and family have stayed since the Royal Family became enamored with the Highlands in the mid-1800s. Pedal from Aberdeen on the North Sea through Cairngorms National Park, Scotland’s first national park, anchored by the mighty Cairngorms massif. Enjoy warm Scottish hospitality in country inns and quaint bed and breakfasts and enjoy traditional and innovative cuisine ranging from delicious piping hot steak pies to salmon mousse on summer salad. Our 8-day itinerary ends with a champagne celebration of our arrival on the Atlantic coast at the UK’s most westerly mainland point, Ardnurmuchan Point.

If you have more time the Isle of Skye is just off the coast- the largest of the Inner Hebrides island chain and one of the most scenic. Join us for our Plus! itinerary and spend time exploring this uniquely beautiful and mountainous island with basalt cliffs, black-faced sheep, and prolific bird life. We’ll learn about the Clans that ruled these islands for centuries and tour their ancestral castles. If there are MacLeods or MacDonalds in your family you likely have ancestors who hailed from the Isle of Skye. We’ll also discover just how that fine Scottish whiskey is made with a visit to the world-renowned Talisker distillery.

No matter which itinerary you choose we’ll pick you up and drop you off in Edinburgh so arriving and departing couldn’t be any easier.  We hope you’ll join us on this extraordinary journey in 2011. Both our July 3 – 10 and September 4 – 11 trips are confirmed so reserve your spot today.  Enjoy the slide show from our scouting visits below.
